Markham Tree Removal Permits

If you’re considering removing a tree from your property, many communities, municipalities, and cities require that you first obtain a tree removal permit before you hire certified arborists to safely remove that tree. If you don’t get a permit, you could be subject to potential fines, fees, and/or compensation. The requirements and specifications differ by community, so be sure to always check with your local bylaws. That’s no different for tree removals in Markham. At Advanced Tree Care we’re happy to help you with the permit process. To start, we’ll explain how to get a tree removal permit in Markham. If you have any questions and want to schedule a tree assessment, be sure to contact us.

Tree Removal Permits and By-law Exemptions in Markham

Markham’s bylaws specify that the removal of any tree with a diameter larger than 20 cm (8 inches) at 1.37 m above the ground requires a tree removal permit or by-law exemption. The town also requires permits when more than 30% of a tree will be pruned. The difference between a permit and exemption, is that the permit is to allow for the removal of a healthy tree typically protected by the bylaw, while a by-law exemption confirms that a hazard, emergency, dying, or dead tree is exempt and does not require a permit. The application for a Markham tree removal permit and bylaw exemption is available online here. After submission, the town will take about 30 days to review the application and confirm whether you have been approved for a tree removal permit or by-law exemption. As part of the application and for the removal itself, Markham may charge fees. However, for trees which receive an exemption, the community will refund any paid fees.

Arborist Inspection to Apply for Tree Removal Permits

In order to receive the permit or by-law exemption, Markham may request a report from an arborist certified by the ISA like the arborists at Advanced Tree Care. These reports provide the community with a professional and informed report about the tree. They are typically required for removing dead, dying, or hazardous trees. The one exception is emergency trees, which do not require an exemption or arborist report prior to removal due to the urgent situation. You will, however, need to notify Markham after the tree is removed. The town will review the case, so include photos that clearly show the damage the emergency tree(s) caused prior to its removal. An arborist report will also help to verify that your emergency removal was justified.
