What is Oak Wilt?
Oak Wilt is caused by the fungus Bretziella Fagacearum.
The disease spreads in two primary ways:
- Sap-feeding beetles carry fungal spores from infected trees to fresh pruning wounds on healthy oak trees.
- Root grafts, where neighbouring oak trees share underground root systems, can allow the disease to spread from one tree to another.
Because of how easily Oak Wilt can spread, even a seemingly minor pruning cut made at the wrong time of year can increase the risk of infection.

Why Oak Trees Should Only Be Pruned During Winter
Unlike many other tree species, oak trees have a very specific pruning window.
In Ontario, oak trees should only be pruned between late November and early March, when both the trees and the insects that spread Oak Wilt are dormant.
From approximately April through early November, sap-feeding beetles become active. These beetles are naturally attracted to the fresh sap produced by newly cut or damaged oak trees. If the beetles have previously visited an infected tree, they can carry fungal spores directly to fresh pruning wounds, infecting an otherwise healthy tree.
