5 Ways to Tell If Your Tree is Sick

Tree health is something that we get a lot of questions about. It’s very important to spot a sick tree before it’s too late, so you can attempt to save it before it dies. Tree removal will leave your yard with a bare spot, and it’s easier to save a tree than having to remove and replace a tree. Thankfully, there are some preventative measures you can take if your tree is sick.

Taking time to inspect your trees once or twice a year can give you some tell tale signs that your tree isn’t at its best. Treat your trees to a thorough inspection from roots to as far up as you can see each season to catch any signs of illness early.

Here are five of the most common ways to spot a sick tree.

Dead branches

A surefire way to tell if your tree is sick is that you’ll notice a lot of dead branches. If you’re pruning your tree regularly, you might notice more dead wood than normal. Dead branches falling are a sign that your tree is sick, and it’s important to act before a dead branch causes damage to your home or property.

Peeling Bark

Look your tree up and down and carefully inspect the bark. If the bark is loose, falling off, or splitting deep in areas, your tree is likely sick and it’s time to take measures to give it what it needs to revive itself.

Leaves That are Abnormally Coloured or Wilting

Unhealthy leaves are an easy thing to spot to tell the true health of your tree. In the summer, you might notice that the leaves aren’t as green as they used to be. In the winter, the dead leaves will cling on instead of turning colour and falling.

Chlorosis

If your tree leaves are looking yellow with dark green veins, or the outer edges of the leaves are turning brown, your tree may be suffering from chlorosis. This problem can be easily solved with the right care, but early intervention is key.

Strange Growths on Leaves or Needles

As you inspect your leaves, check for strange growths for signs of tree diseases or pests. If something doesn’t look right, contact us at Advanced Tree Care for a second opinion. Remember, your tree’s leaves are a vital sign of health and if something looks off, your tree might be trying to ask for help.
