Tree Pruning: Three Easy Steps

Tree Pruning: Three Easy Steps

Have a tree that needs pruning? Tree pruning is a relatively easy task that can be tackled by following a few simple rules. The key objective is to prune all unwanted branches without sacrificing the health of tree’s trunk or stem wood.

Tree branches grow from stems and you should always prune from the branch-side of the stem. Tree branches and stems are separated by the stem collar. The stem collar grows from the stem at the base of the branch. All pruning cuts should be made on the branch side of the stem collar. This will allow the tree to adequately heal after pruning and prevent stem and bark wood tearing. The following are standard steps to pruning a tree:

  1. Make a small wedge cut on the branch side of the stem collar. This will help to ensure the bark breaks clean and does not tear.
  2. Start cutting at the top of the branch. Be sure to cut all the way through tree branch until a stub is left.
  3. Reduce the length of the stub as much as possible by making a third cut parallel to the branch side of the stem collar.

Lastly, be sure to assess the size of your tree prior to pruning. Large tree maintenance typically requires climbing and use of heavy tools such as chainsaws. These jobs may be better left to the professionals. You can follow along on Facebook and Instagram, or you can contact us here if you have any questions.
