Arborist Consulting May Save Your Tree

As we reach the six month mark of the ice-storm clean up you may have some concerns about your trees as the new growing season may have uncovered some issues. Like many homeowners you may have adopted a wait and see approach for trees on your property after initial clean up was done. Now you are faced with the decision of trying to save the tree or remove it. Here are three factors to weigh when making that decision.

  1. Stripped of Branches. If the tree is missing too many branches and resembles a toothpick it may need to be removed. Trees need healthy branching and leaves to get the proper nourishment.
  2. Too Much Off the Top. The top leafy part of the tree referred to as the crown is vital to a tree’s ability to survive. If too much of the crown is missing the tree won’t likely be able to grow enough new branches and leaves to get the required nourishment to live.
  3. Trunk Splits. An unstable inner core or structural problems in branching can cause a trunk to split. This disrupts the circulatory system between roots and leaves. Trees cannot survive in this case.

What You Can Do

There are some things you can do to give your trees the best chance to bounce back such as making sure the roots of the tree are well watered, aerating around the tree, and using mulch to retain moisture. Trees can be very resilient and with proper care most will survive and thrive despite damage caused by the storm. This is especially true of young trees.
