Caring for Fruit Trees
One of Advanced Tree Care’s specialty services is pruning fruit trees. Fruit tree pruning is series specific. We provide an annual service to keep trees looking good and producing quality fruit.
Deciduous fruit trees like cherries, apples, pears, nectarines and peaches are pruned during their dormant season in January and February. Citrus trees, such as lemons and oranges are pruned during the summer after any threat of frost has past.
When citrus trees are young, growers will often trim the lower limbs as the tree ages in order to shape the tree. The trees are usually topped to keep them low for easy harvesting. Regular shaving at the desired height will help shape them.
A buffer zone with no grass is typically kept around the trunks of citrus trees to keep lawn maintenance equipment a safe distance from tender bark.
Another popular way of pruning citrus trees is to shape them into bushes. When the tree grows to the desired height, cut across the top to force the tree to branch out and become bushy. Then continue trimming to shape each year right after it fruits.
