Maple Tree Diseases That Require Professional Tree Care In Aurora and York Region
The large maple trees in your yard offer an abundance of shade in the enjoyable Ontario summers. If your trees become diseased, the infected leaves can drop off early and compromise the health of your tree. Below you’ll discover common diseases that can affect your maple trees.
Anthracnose
Anthracnose is a leaf blight disease that causes brown, irregular shaped blotches to appear on the leaves of maple trees. Spores on the dead leaves that have been on the ground throughout the winter begin to contaminate the new healthy leaves. The disease starts to infect the leaves in early spring and spreads throughout the tree. After the brown blotches appear, the leaves will dry up, curl, and fall off the tree earlier than normal. To prevent this disease from infecting your trees, rake up the fallen leaves and destroy them. Root feeding the infected trees can prevent further damage.
Nectria Canker
This disease is life threatening to maple trees when circular cankers appear on the branches and trunk. The trunk becomes infected through bark or branch wounds as the infection travels through the tree. At risk trees are those that are undernourished or have less than favorable growing conditions. When a canker spreads around an entire branch or the trunk, the diseased section will wither and eventually break off from the tree. Root feeding a diseased tree can help, along with surgical removal of the canker by an experienced tree care Aurora professional.
Verticillium Wilt
This fungus lives in the soil and it infects the tissues of tree branches. As the fungus steals the nutrients and water from the branches, the leaves turn yellow, wilt and fall from the tree. If the weather is extremely dry, the leaves will wilt and fall even sooner. Verticillium Wilt begins by infecting a couple of branches and eventually the fungus spreads to the entire tree. Trimming off the diseased branches, along with root feeding and frequent watering, can often save the tree.
