Preventing Fire Damage
Fire season is upon us and it’s time for residents to prepare their homes for the season. The earlier you cut back on trees and do weed abatement, the better your chances of creating a safe, defensible space around your home.
Weeding and cutting back grasses when they’re still green and temperatures are still mild, prevents fires that can catch in the midst of the yard work as well.
Urban homes need to be aware of woodpiles stacked around the house and rain gutters filled with leaves.
Here is a list of things you can do to make your home defensible in the event of a fire:
- Remove all dead plants, grass and weeds.
- Trim trees regularly to keep branches at a minimum of 10 feet from other trees and your home.
- Remove leaves and pine needles from your yard, roof and rain gutters.
- Relocate any wood piles to an area at least 30 feet from the house.
- Separate items that could catch fire in the yard, such as patio furniture, wood piles and swing sets.
