Property Management Tree Care In Richmond Hill: Common Pests
One of the responsibilities of being a property manager is to maintain beautiful lawns and healthy trees. An insect infestation can quickly cause considerable damage to the trees on the property you manage. If you have a pest infestation, a tree care Richmond Hill professional has the expertise to save your trees. Below you’ll discover how to identify some of the most common tree pests in Ontario.
Gypsy Moths – These brown or black juvenile caterpillars are only ¼ of an inch long and as they mature, they’ll measure around 2 ½ inches long. Upon close inspection, you’ll see bumps covering their back and stiff hairs. They have blue dots on the front portion of their body and red dots extend to their back end. These pests prefer hardwoods including maple, elm and oak trees; however, if you have an abundance of these pests on your property, you’ll see them in all your trees and shrubs.
Eastern Tent Caterpillars –If these insects are on your property, you’ll first notice silk nests in the limbs of your crab apple, wild cherry or pear trees. These hairy larvae have a black and white line along their back. Their sides are yellow and brown striped with blue oval spots. Once these caterpillars infest your trees, the leaves will soon be gone.
Asian Long Horned Beetle – When mature, these large beetles will be 1 to 1 ½ inches in length. These black insects have a long antennae and they appear shiny. They’re easy to identify because of the white specks on their body. These insects have wings, but they don’t fly very far. They prefer maples, but they won’t turn down poplars, elms or willow trees. These pests burrow into the wood, which compromises the structure of the tree.
