Toronto and GTA Tree Removal Permits
If you’re considering removing a tree from your property, many communities, municipalities, and cities require that you first obtain a tree removal permit before you hire certified arborists to safely remove that tree. If you don’t get a permit, you will be subject to potential fines, fees, and/or compensation. The requirements and specifications differ by community, so be sure to always check with your local bylaws. That’s no different for tree removals in Toronto and the GTA. Tree Removal Permits in Toronto and the GTA
Toronto’s bylaws specify that the removal or injury of any tree with a diameter larger than 30 cm (12 inches) at 1.4 m above the ground requires a tree removal permit. The application for a Toronto tree removal or injury permit is available here and should be sent or brought to the appropriate district’s office with your Advanced Tree Care Arborist Report (a map is provided on the application form). After submission, the city will take about 30 days to review the application and confirm whether you have been approved for a tree removal permit. As part of the application and for the type of removal itself, Toronto will charge various fees.
Arborist Inspection to Apply for Tree Removal Permits
In order to receive the permit, Toronto and the GTA also require the application to include a report from an arborist certified by the ISA like the arborists at Advanced Tree Care. These reports provide the community with a professional and informed report about the tree. The one exception is emergency trees, which will not require a permit. You should, however, notify Toronto within 72 hours after the tree is removed. The city will review the case, so include photos that clearly show the damage the emergency tree(s) caused prior to its removal. An arborist report will also help to verify that your emergency removal was justified.
