With their variety of forms and colors, tree fungi are an interesting thing to look at while on a nature walk. However, if you spot a fungus on a tree in your property, your tree may be in a lot of trouble. A diseased tree may be structurally weak and can present a hazard to people and property from falling branches or even from the tree itself toppling over in a strong wind.

Tree fungi are organisms that are neither plant nor animal. They reproduce by sending out spores which germinate in susceptible trees. These fungi are parasites that send out threads of tissue into a tree and feed on its host. Four types of tree fungi are described below.

Root And Butt Rot

Root and butt rot infect the roots and the butt or the part of a tree trunk just above its roots. The fungus progresses into the interior of the tree and can cause structural weakness.

Foliar Fungus

When you notice that the leaves and needles on your trees have discoloration or spots and blotches, then they are infected with foliar fungus. The entire leaf can become discolored and even complete sections of a tree\’s foliage may be discolored. If the disease is severe enough, the tree itself will die.

Canker Fungus

This fungus occurs on the trunk of trees and enters through wounds in the bark. These wounds can be caused by improper pruning, lawn mower damage and wind damage. The fungus causes the wound to become sunken and discolored. When the fungus is ready to reproduce, it will form a mushroom or a protuberance that is shaped like a shelf that grows from the tree trunk.

Vascular Wilt

The fungi responsible for vascular wilt enter into the vascular vessels of the tree which transport water and nutrients. It eventually kills off the xylem tissue which is responsible for transport. When this happens, the stems and leaves on the tree wilt.
