Why Is Tree Pruning Important?
Tree pruning is an essential component of proper tree maintenance. Most importantly, tree pruning makes the surrounding area safer for everyone. A dead branch can fall from a tree, endangering nearby people, buildings, and power lines. Removing dangerous parts and maintaining a safe tree is always a good idea.
However, depending on the size of the tree and the location height of the branches, pruning itself can also be very dangerous. We highly recommend that an expert arborist do the pruning for you – to ensure that the process is completed as safely and efficiently as possible.
Tree Growth
Pruning a tree can influence in what way the tree grows. With proper pruning, a tree can be made to grow into a certain configuration of limbs and branches that is more ideal for the structural integrity of the tree.
Enhancing the tree’s structure helps to reduce the risk of broken and falling branches. A well pruned tree is less likely to have compromising branch structures and improper weight distribution that could lead to disaster later on in the tree’s life. Structural pruning can also greatly improve the general look of the tree. If the aesthetic look is important to you, proper pruning can make a tree grow in the desired fashion.
When and How Often to Prune
Generally, routine maintenance pruning can be completed at any time. Maintenance pruning is the removal of dead, diseased, crossing and interfering branches. Emergency branch removal should be completed without delay to protect persons from injury or property from damage.
Aggressive tree or shrub pruning, where significant portions of live canopy are being removed for various reasons, should be performed in late fall or winter, during the dormant season. It’s during this time that the tree is least susceptible to stress that may result from pruning. Trees are susceptible to stress just like any other creature and removing their branches does cause damage to the tree.
When the tree is dormant, no sap is lost and, insects and fungus are less likely to further damage the tree. Of course, certain species of trees require more precise timing and different approaches for proper pruning. If you’re ever in doubt, contact us and have one of our expert arborists do an inspection for you before potentially risking both your tree’s safety and your own.
In terms of timing – depending on the heath and vigour of your tree, we recommend pruning every 3-8 years. And hedges or topiary are normally done once a year.
